Resting on your Laurels | Story no. 77/101

Once upon a time, there was a rabbit in a school. He was over confident about himself. He used to think that nobody is like him in the class. There was a tortoise in his class too – he was weak in studies and use to score less marks. Due to this, nobody use to talk to him. The rabbit use to tease him about his weak capabilities in studies.

One day the tortoise said to him “Don’t be overconfident about yourself. One day your ego will make you pay.” By hearing this the rabbit got angry and challenged him for the first rank in the final exam. Tortoise accepted it.

As the days gone by, the rabbit use to secure first rank in class tests and prelims. The tortoise use to score average marks but was improving day by day. Since the rabbit always use to secure first spot, he became more overconfident about himself. He started to think that he knows everything. Due to this, he started ignoring his studies.

The exam came near but still the rabbit was relaxed. During this time, the tortoise use to work hard and study regularly. After the exams, the results were out and the tortoise secured first rank while rabbit got less marks due to his overconfidence.

De-briefing of this Story

This story is reminder of – never to rest on our laurels. We may never know when someone might overtake us in this competitive world, so always keep on improving yourself. Remember the words of Charlie Munger (partner of Warren Buffet) – “Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up. Day by day, and at the end of the day-if you live long enough-like most people, you will get out of life what you deserve.”
